President Lee Jae Myung on Monday directed officials to conduct full-scale investigations of workplaces whenever a wage arrears case is reported.

At a briefing, presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung said Lee ordered improvements to the overall oversight of wage arrears and urged stronger preventive measures.

Lee stressed that no worker should suffer the injustice of unpaid wages and told ministries to hire more labor inspectors if necessary to improve procedures.

Currently, labor offices only review the individual worker’s complaint, without examining whether others at the same site have also been affected.

Lee’s order follows his earlier directive last week for a fact-finding probe into mistreatment and wage arrears among foreign workers in South Korea.
