An appeals court on Monday upheld prison terms for four men involved in a violent disturbance at Seoul Western District Court earlier this year.

Two defendants, surnamed Kim and Cho, had received 18 months and one year in prison respectively at their first trial, while another pair, also surnamed So and Cho, were sentenced to one year and two and a half years.

The court dismissed all four appeals, saying their actions—throwing bricks and bottles at the courthouse and smashing property inside—were grave offenses undermining the rule of law.

The incident took place on January 19, when the men stormed the court in anger over the detention of former President Yoon Suk Yeol.

Judges said the severity of the crime made leniency impossible, ruling that the original sentences were not excessive.

All four remain in custody following Thursday’s decision.
