South Korea’s minor Rebuilding Korea Party on Tuesday decided to recommend Cho Kuk, head of the party’s policy institute, as emergency committee chair following its leadership’s mass resignation.

Lawmakers had failed to agree after three previous meetings, but a majority in the afternoon caucus backed Cho as the figure to guide the party through its internal crisis.

Floor leader Seo Wang-jin said while dissent existed, most felt Cho should take responsibility as one of the party’s key leaders.

The party pledged that its emergency committee will work to restore public trust and return to the spirit of its founding.

Cho is expected to be formally confirmed at the party’s national committee meeting on September 11.
