The first hearing in the trial for former first lady Kim Keon Hee will begin on September 24 at the Seoul Central District Court.

Kim faces charges of taking part in a stock manipulation scheme, receiving free opinion polls, and accepting luxury gifts tied to the Unification Church.

Prosecutors allege she worked with executives of Deutsche Motors from 2010 to 2012 to reap illicit profits of more than 800 million won.

She is also accused of benefiting from 58 free public opinion polls worth 2.7 billion won, or roughly 1.94 million U.S. dollars, during her husband’s presidential campaign.

In addition, investigators say she accepted luxury bags and jewelry worth about 80 million won through an aide linked to the church.

The case marks the first time in South Korea’s history that a first lady is indicted and tried while under detention.
