The drought-stricken city of Gangneung in eastern Gangwon Province and areas along the east coast are forecast to see rain starting Friday night.

According to the Gangwon office of the Korea Meteorological Administration on Thursday, showers will hit the region from Friday night until Saturday due to the impact of a passing low pressure system.

Some areas along the coast, including Gangneung, may get up to 80 millimeters of precipitation, while inland and mountainous regions could receive more than 120 millimeters.

More rain is in store next week Wednesday for the western parts of Gangwon Province ahead of another round of showers around September 20.

According to officials, the water storage level of Obong reservoir, the main water source for Gangneung's 180-thousand residents, dropped slightly to eleven-point-seven percent as of 1:50 p.m. Thursday.
