Lawmakers on Thursday approved a motion to arrest opposition People Power Party lawmaker Kweon Seong-dong on charges of receiving illicit funds from the Unification Church.

The secret ballot passed with 173 in favor, one against, one abstention and two invalid out of 177 votes cast.

PPP lawmakers boycotted the vote, though Kweon himself participated, and the lone dissenting vote is believed to be his.

The Democratic Party left voting to its members’ discretion, but its lawmakers and those from the Rebuilding Korea Party largely supported the motion.

Kweon, a close ally of former president Yoon Suk Yeol, will now face a court hearing to determine whether he will be detained.

Before the vote he denounced the special counsel’s claims as false, while PPP floor leader Song Eon-seog said the decision was a “gift” to mark President Lee Jae Myung’s 100th day in office.
