South Korea’s government said Tuesday it would conduct a joint investigation into allegations of human rights violations raised by South Koreans detained in Georgia earlier this month.

The foreign ministry said it was working with the justice ministry and affected companies to begin a full review as soon as possible.

Officials noted that earlier consular visits to detention centers had failed to gather detailed testimony because they were focused on urgent issues at the time.

The ministry said it would raise the matter with Washington if the review found credible evidence of mistreatment.

Detainees have reported poor conditions, mocking remarks from U.S. agents and a failure to be read their Miranda rights during arrest.

The investigation aims to document cases systematically and prevent additional mass detentions during future Korean investment projects in the U.S.
