The winning streak for South Korean stocks came to an abrupt end Wednesday as investors looked to reap profit ahead of the Federal Reserve's rate decision.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index on Wednesday fell 36-point-22 points, or one-point-05 percent, to close at three-thousand-413-point-four.

Chip shares led losses after U.S. President Donald Trump hinted that he might impose tariffs of higher than 25 percent on chips and pharmaceutical products.

Investors sold off shares to lock in profit ahead of the Federal Reserve's rate-setting meeting on Wednesday, where the U.S. central bank is widely expected to cut its benchmark interest rate.

Meanwhile, the tech-heavy KOSDAQ fell six-point-31 points, or zero-point-74 percent, to close at 845-point-53.
