Police will set up a team to handle bomb threats at every South Korean municipal and provincial police agency ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation(APEC) summit taking place in the southeastern city of Gyeongju next month.

The National Police Agency announced Thursday that the new teams, compromising members of both police squads and digital investigation units, will be tasked to swiftly respond to any threat of detonation or terrorist action during the APEC event.

The announcement comes on the heels of a recent series of false bomb threats in the country.

The police also plan to conduct a terrorism response drill simulating a complex attack on foreign guests at the APEC summit's venue on Incheon's Yeongjong Island.

The government's terrorism countermeasures headquarters held a previous drill in August of last year at Ulsan Airport.
