Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Myeong Jae-wan, an elementary school teacher in the central city of Daejeon accused of fatally stabbing a first grader in February.

The prosecution requested capital punishment at the Daejeon District Court on Monday for the suspect, who is charged with violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes.

The agency said the accused has not shown the slightest bit of remorse for allegedly killing an innocent seven-year-old.

The prosecution said Myeong had an "abnormal motive" and had brutally murdered a child in order to relieve pent-up anger following isolation, family trouble, an early return from a medical leave and difficulty adjusting to her workplace.

On February 10, Myeong enticed the student to leave an after-school child care program and enter an empty audiovisual room by offering her a book, before choking and fatally stabbing her.
