A North Korean attempting to enter the South Korean Consulate in Beijing is reported to have been injured in a struggle with Chinese guards. South Korean diplomats in Beijing said Saturday an alleged North Korean entered the consulate around 4:45 pm Friday, local time, followed by three others, whom however were stopped by Chinese guards. The standoff lasted for well over an hour with two of the asylum seekers warding off a large group of officers with hand-held weapons. A consulate staff said the third person carried what looked like a small explosive device. The official went on to say that the one person with a weapon was injured in confronting the guards, but the wound may have been self inflicted. He is known to be safe, while South Korean officials are questioning the others on their identities and motives of the incident. North Koreans have frequently stormed into foreign missions in an effort to defect to Seoul, but this is the first time that a person was injured in the attempt.
