The government announced Wednesday that it will prohibit consumers from modifying the maximum operating speed of electric scooters and bikes.

Via revisions to relevant safety standards, the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy will also prevent manufacturers, importers and vendors from providing support or information related to such modifications.

The move follows a series of accidents involving such mobility devices being driven at high speeds.

It is illegal in Korea to drive e-scooters and e-bikes faster than 25 kilometers per hour, and it is also illegal to sell such vehicles with the capacity to drive at such speeds.

Still, it is not currently illegal to purchase an e-scooter or e-bike and modify its top speed — leading some vendors to encourage or even guide customers on how to bump up the limit.
