The Korean won depreciated sharply against the U.S. dollar on Friday, closing at its weakest level in four months.

The closing spot rate as of 3:30 p.m. was one-thousand-412-point-four won per dollar, up eleven-point-eight won from the previous day, marking its first return to the 1-thousand-410 range since May.

Strong U.S. economic data bolstered the greenback while uncertainty regarding U.S.-Korea trade negotiations weighed on sentiment.

Market concerns deepened after U.S. President Donald Trump called Korea’s 350 billion dollar U.S. investment pledge an “up-front” commitment.

Stocks also tumbled, with the benchmark KOSPI sinking 85-point-06 points, or two-point-45 percent, to three-thousand-386-point-05, and the tech-heavy KOSDAQ losing 17-point-29 points, or two-point-03 percent, to close at 835-point-19.
