South Korea’s special counsel team assigned to the December 3 martial law case on Friday asked a Seoul court to allow live coverage of former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo’s first trial.

Han is charged with abetting insurrection, perjury, falsifying official documents and violating the Presidential Records Act.

His first hearing is scheduled to take place at 10 a.m. on Sept. 30 before the Seoul Central District Court’s 33rd criminal division.

Under the special counsel law, first-instance trials of cases brought by the special counsel are to be broadcast unless the court finds security or public order risks.

The request mirrors a decision the court made on Tuesday to broadcast former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s trial for abuse of power.

That session gave the public a direct view of exchanges between Yoon’s lawyers and prosecutors for the first time.
