Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba will visit South Korea from Tuesday to Wednesday for a summit with President Lee Jae Myung.

South Korea's presidential office announced Friday that the two leaders will meet in the southern port city of Busan for a discussion followed by dinner.

The visit follows the resumption of “shuttle diplomacy” in August, when the leaders agreed to hold their next meeting outside Seoul.

It marks the first time in 21 years that a Japanese prime minister has held a bilateral summit outside South Korea's capital. Former Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi last met former President Roh Moo-hyun in Jeju in 2004.

Presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung said the talks will focus on strengthening future-oriented ties, regional peace and trilateral cooperation with the United States.

She added that the two sides will also exchange views on shared issues of concern openly and candidly.
