National Security Advisor: Hard to Be Optimistic About US Currency Swap

South Korea's top presidential aide says it could be "difficult" to secure a currency swap with the United States.

In an interview with three domestic news agencies on Tuesday, National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac stated that a currency swap remains unlikely, citing the United States' historical reluctance to allow such arrangements.

Wi characterized a currency swap as a "necessary," but not sufficient, condition for a deal with Washington, noting that reaching an agreement would require resolving broader issues.

Nevertheless, Wi also said that he was not overly pessimistic about negotiations with the U.S. and that he believed they could get back on track.

He added that next month’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Gyeongju could serve as a potential turning point.
