A Seoul court has rejected habeas corpus petitions by Rep. Kweon Seong-dong and Unification Church leader Han Hak-ja, deciding to keep both in custody amid ongoing corruption investigations.

The Seoul Central District Court issued the rulings on Wednesday, hours after concluding hearings to review the legality of their detention.

The court said that after reviewing extensive interrogation results and case records, it found no justification to grant their release.

Kweon, a lawmaker with the main opposition People Power Party, is accused of receiving 100 million won, or approximately 73-thousand U.S. dollars, in illegal political funds from the Unification Church in 2022.

Han is accused of providing the funds to Kweon and offering luxury gifts to former first lady Kim Keon-hee in exchange for favorable treatment of her church.
