A survey has found that only 40-point-four percent of consumers plan to set a Chuseok ancestral table this year, down sharply from 74-point-four percent in 2016.

Researchers cited value shifts, simpler customs, and the rise of the nuclear family as reasons for the decline.

Most of those who do plan to set a table said they will simplify the traditional rules, while fewer intend to follow strict rituals or ancestors’ preferences.

Domestic fruits remain popular, led by pears at 28-point-nine percent and apples at 28-point-six percent, but imported fruits are gaining ground.

About one in three respondents said they will include bananas, oranges or kiwis on the table, up more than 10 percentage points from seven years ago.

The survey by the Korea Rural Economic Institute polled 1,000 adults nationwide between September 1 and 5.
