Japan’s governing party has elected former Economic Security Minister Sanae Takaichi as its new leader.

In a runoff in an intraparty vote by the Liberal Democratic Party on Saturday, Takaichi defeated Agriculture Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, the son of former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.

Takaichi’s election means she is likely to become Japan’s first female prime minister.

Takaichi, 64, is considered a wartime history revisionist.

She has regularly visited the Yasukuni Shrine, which honors Japanese war dead, including several Class A war criminals.
