A South Korean climber has died on Nepal’s Mera Peak after being trapped in a snowstorm during descent, according to Reuters and local media.

Tulsi Gurung, head of the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association, was quoted as saying that a rescue helicopter recovered the body on Monday from a height of around five-thousand-800 meters and the climber’s Sherpa guide was rescued nearby.

Authorities believe the 46-year-old victim died of hypothermia after being stranded since Friday amid severe blizzard conditions.

The reports said hundreds of climbers were also stranded on the Chinese side of Mount Everest over the weekend, though most have since been rescued and evacuated to safety.

Situated about 31 kilometers south of Mount Everest, the six-thousand-476-meter Mera Peak is a popular trekking destination known for panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu.
