The government plans to extend by one month the length of the basic education period for North Korean defectors to help them better adjust to South Korean society. Officials said on Monday that under the plan, slated for implementation in October, the training period for the defectors will be extended from the current two months to three months in a resettlement center called "Hanawon." Hanawon is located in Anseong, about 80 kilometers south of Seoul, and provides housing and job training for North Korean newcomers. The Seoul government had earlier announced it would expand the education period after it accepted 468 North Korean defectors in late July. The expansion has been delayed until now due to a lack of funds and facilities.
