Two South Korean nationals have been rescued in Cambodia after being held captive by a local voice phishing organization.

KBS has learned that the Cambodian police secured custody of the two South Koreans, aged 35 and 27, around 2 a.m. local time on September 30 in the country’s coastal city of Sihanoukville.

The two are being questioned by local police and are reportedly awaiting deportation to South Korea.

They have reportedly told law enforcement that they went to Cambodia after being told there were good employment opportunities there, but that their captors forced to them engage in voice phishing through intimidation and physical assault.

The South Koreans had previously sought help in August via public mobile phone, but their abductors had relocated by the time local police raided their initial location.

They eventually contacted their family in South Korea via email, resulting in the police raid and rescue ten days later.
