A man in his 30s died after attacking a family living above him with a knife inside an apartment elevator in Uijeongbu, just north of Seoul, on Monday morning.

Police said the suspect, who lived alone and was unemployed, boarded the elevator and stabbed a couple in their 40s and their elementary school daughter as they were seeing the child off to a school retreat.

The victims were taken to a hospital, with the wife in stable condition despite having lost a lot of blood.

The attacker was found dead in his bathroom about 50 minutes after the assault, apparently from self-inflicted wounds.

While some residents recalled noise-related disputes, authorities confirmed they had received no formal complaints between the two households.

Police are continuing to investigate the motive.
