Police will operate regional Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation(APEC) summit command centers ahead of the event in Gyeongju later this month beginning Monday.

Acting Police Commissioner General Yoo Jae-seong told reporters the same day that it will gradually dispatch additional personnel to APEC security hubs at the National Police Agency, Gyeongbuk Provincial Police and Busan Metropolitan Police in the days leading up to the summit.

The police plan to strengthen security starting October 21 and issue a Gapho security alert, the highest level in the country's three-tier system, for the provincial and metropolitan agencies on October 28.

The emergency alert will allow the agencies to mobilize 100 percent of their available officers and restrict annual leave.

The police will also dispatch 87 riot squads to Gyeongju and Busan to manage rallies and protests before and during the summit.
