President Lee Jae Myung has pledged stronger government support for South Korea’s gaming industry, calling it a crucial part in making the nation a global cultural powerhouse.

Speaking at a gaming industry roundtable in Seoul on Wednesday, Lee said the sector had suffered under past administrations that labeled gaming as an addiction, and vowed to encourage growth rather than suppression.

He acknowledged that concerns remain over gaming addiction but argued that enjoyment should be viewed as part of a healthy life, with side effects managed through balanced policies rather than strict regulation.

Lee also highlighted the industry’s role in creating jobs for young people and called for fairer profit-sharing between companies and developers.

He further stressed the need for safeguards to protect workers’ rights and prevent exploitation, describing gaming exports as a vital source of revenue for the nation.
