A South Korean man in his late 50s was found dead in a hotel room in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, a region known for a high concentration of criminal activity.

According to South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, the man was discovered around 8 p.m. local time on Monday. A consular officer was immediately dispatched to the scene.

The ministry reported that local police informed the South Korean Embassy of the death through the head of the local Korean community.

At the embassy’s request, the community leader visited the hotel and located the man’s passport, a note believed to be a suicide letter and his mobile phone.

The ministry stated that, upon receiving the report, it immediately sent a consular official to the site and will continue to provide assistance, including notifying the bereaved family, supporting funeral arrangements and requesting a swift investigation from Cambodian authorities.
