The presidential office says it hopes to continue engaging with Japan’s new prime minister.

Presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung revealed the stance in a regular briefing on Tuesday, hours after Sanae Takaichi was elected Japan’s first female prime minister.

Kang said the leaders of South Korea and Japan have long achieved progress in bilateral relations through confidence and communication, adding that the government hopes to maintain the foundation of such advanced relations while continuing cultural exchange.

Asked about the possibility of a South Korea-Japan summit taking place on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation gathering later in October, Kang said related working-level talks are underway and expressed hope that such a meeting will take place.

The spokesperson said President Lee Jae Myung plans to convey his congratulations to the newly elected prime minister soon via social media.
