The National Assembly’s Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee held a parliamentary inspection at the South Korean embassy in Phnom Penh on Wednesday.

Lawmakers focused on reviewing the conditions of crimes targeting South Koreans in Cambodia and the South Korean embassy’s response to such cases.

During the inspection, main opposition People Power Party Rep. Song Eon-seog said approximately 100 cases of abduction and detention involving South Koreans in the Southeast Asian country remain unsolved.

Both ruling and opposition party lawmakers condemned the embassy’s handling of the cases, with many of them saying it had failed to properly tackle a number of cases because it determined that the reports had come from people also involved in crimes.

The embassy, for its part, said it had struggled to tackle the cases in question because those who reported the crimes failed to provide accurate testimony regarding their own involvement.
