Amnesty International has called on South Korean lawmakers to abolish or consider a fundamental review of the controversial anti-communist National Security Law.
In a news conference, Amnesty International said that “vaguely worded clauses” of the security legislation infringe on people’s rights and added that the abolishment of the law would be a “step forward in significantly improving human rights in South Korea.”
Meanwhile, U-N High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour met with Prime Minister Lee Hae-chan in Seoul Wednesday and expressed her support for the scrapping on the anti-communist law, saying now is the right time to discuss its repeal.
The former Canadian Supreme Court Justice is in Seoul to attend the 7th International Conference for National Human Rights Institutions.
