The South Korean military will launch the country's fifth and final domestically developed reconnaissance satellite to better detect North Korean provocation.

Seoul's defense ministry said Friday that the synthetic aperture radar(SAR) spy satellite is scheduled to lift off from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida around 2 p.m., Korea Standard Time, on Sunday.

The ministry said a cluster of five satellites, including one with electro-optical and infrared sensors and three SAR satellites launched since December 2023, will enable the military to more quickly and accurately detect signs of North Korean provocation.

The ministry also anticipates that the satellites will enhance the military's three-axis deterrence system to counter the North's nuclear and missile threats.

Once all five satellites are in orbit, the military will be able to conduct surveillance and reconnaissance on specific targets in the North every two hours.
