South Korea has successfully established communication with its fifth reconnaissance satellite, launched from a U.S. space base.

According to the defense ministry, the military spy satellite was launched at 2:09 p.m. Sunday, Korea time, from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

The satellite entered orbit about 14 minutes after liftoff and successfully communicated with a ground station around 3:09 p.m.

The launch marks the completion of the “425 Project,” which aims to deploy five reconnaissance satellites to secure the country’s medium- and large-scale military satellite constellation.

The ministry said that with the latest launch, the military has gained the capability to detect North Korean provocation more swiftly and accurately under the newly completed network of reconnaissance satellites.
