A recent U.S. poll assessing the Trump administration’s performance found that public support for its tariff policy lagged behind overall approval and other individual policies.
Only 33 percent of respondents to a survey of two-thousand-725 adults, conducted by Ipsos on behalf of The Washington Post and ABC News from October 24 to 28, supported U.S. tariffs on imported goods, while 65 percent opposed them.
Support for the tariffs was eight percentage points lower than President Trump’s overall approval rating of 41 percent.
It was notably lower than approval of the Trump administration’s performance in other areas, such as the economy, immigration, management of the federal government, crime and conflicts in the Middle East.
A majority also said Trump has gone too far in exercising the powers of his office, with 64 percent saying he has done too much “to expand the power of the presidency."
The survey has an overall margin of error of plus or minus one-point-nine percentage points.
