The presidential office reiterated its position that suspending the ongoing trials of sitting presidents for the duration of their term in office is unnecessary.

Presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung made the statement on Monday, when asked whether the ruling Democratic Party's(DP) decision to withdraw its push for a bill to halt such legal proceedings reflects President Lee Jae Myung's intent.

Earlier, DP chief spokesperson Park Soo-hyun said the party leadership had decided against pursuing the revision and instead would focus on tariff negotiations with the U.S. and the outcomes of last week's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation(APEC) summit in Gyeongju.

The DP spokesperson said the party leadership had discussed the matter and consulted the top office.

The ruling party backtracked amid public backlash, with President Lee Jae Myung's five pending trials put on hold after his June inauguration.
