The presidential office said the proposed court-suspension bill, which would halt the ongoing trials of sitting presidents, is unnecessary, citing Article 84 of the Constitution, which already provides for suspension.

Chief of staff Kang Hoon-sik told reporters during a briefing at the presidential office on Monday that the clause renders additional legislation redundant and confirmed that he'd asked the ruling Democratic Party to exclude the measure from its judicial reform package.

He warned against dragging the president into political strife, adding that President Lee Jae Myung shares the same view.

Kang explained that if courts ever violated the constitutional clause, constitutional review and later legislation could follow.

Presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung reaffirmed the stance.

The Democratic Party has halted its push for the bill after coordinating with the presidential office.
