The United States has imposed sanctions on eight individuals and two entities accused of laundering the proceeds of North Korean cybercrime.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control announced Tuesday that the sanctions target eight North Korean nationals and two organizations involved in schemes tied to online criminal activity and fraud targeting information technology(IT) workers.

The agency said that North Korean bankers Jang Kuk-chol and Ho Jong-son had managed assets including five-point-three million U.S. dollars in cryptocurrency, part of which was linked to a North Korean ransomware actor that previously targeted U.S. citizens, and laundered funds.

The sanctioned North Korean entities include the Korea Mangyongdae Computer Technology Company, an IT firm, and Ryujong Credit Bank, a financial institution.

Undersecretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence John Hurley said North Korean state-sponsored hackers steal and launder money to fund the regime’s nuclear weapons program.

Hurley added that by generating revenue for Pyongyang’s weapons development, these actors directly threaten U.S. and global security, emphasizing that the Treasury will continue to pursue those facilitating or enabling such schemes to cut off the North’s illicit revenue streams.
