Coupang reported record sales of nearly 13 trillion won in the third quarter and an operating profit surge of more than 51 percent, beating expectations, as its growth momentum in South Korea’s e-commerce industry.

Coupang Inc., Coupon’s U.S. parent company, announced in its third-quarter consolidated earnings report submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday that sales had risen 20 percent from the previous year to 12-point-84 trillion won, or roughly eight-point-nine billion U.S. dollars.

But operating profit fell short, rising 51-point-five percent from the previous year to 224-point-five billion won, or 155-point-two million dollars.

The solid quarterly performance came on the back of the company’s product commerce division, including Coupang’s popular Rocket Delivery and Rocket Fresh services, as well as Marketplace, which accounted for 11-point-six trillion won, or eight billion dollars, in sales, up 18 percent from a year ago.

The company also said it recorded 24-point-seven million active customers, or users who had purchased a product at least once on Coupang, marking a 10 percent jump from the previous year.

Meanwhile, quarterly sales at the company's new growth businesses, including Taiwan Rocket Delivery and luxury retailer Farfetch, jumped 31 percent year-over-year to one-point-78 trillion won, or one-point-23 billion dollars.
