A man in his 30s accused of killing a Japanese tourist while driving under the influence in central Seoul apologized for his actions during a detention hearing on Wednesday.
The Seoul Central District Court held the review for the suspect, surnamed Seo, who faces charges of drunk driving and dangerous driving resulting in death under Korea’s Road Traffic Act and the Aggravated Punishment Act.
Seo allegedly struck a Japanese mother and daughter on a crosswalk near Dongdaemun Station late Sunday night while heavily intoxicated.
The mother, in her 50s, was killed, and the daughter was injured.
The victims had arrived in Korea earlier that day for a short sightseeing trip.
The family of the deceased arrived in Seoul on Wednesday to meet Seo’s lawyer.
Police said the suspect had expressed willingness to cover the funeral and repatriation costs.
The court is expected to rule on the detention as early as Wednesday evening.
