South Korea's foreign minister will travel to Cambodia to discuss online scams targeting Korean nationals in Southeast Asia amid rising cases of abduction and detention.

Foreign ministry spokesperson Lee Jae-woong told a press briefing on Thursday that Foreign Minister Cho Hyun is scheduled to visit Phnom Penh from Sunday through Tuesday.

Cho plans to meet with Cambodia's foreign and interior ministers to discuss cooperation to combat online scams and to develop bilateral relations.

The minister will also meet with South Korean residents of the Southeast Asian country.

Lee said the two sides are discussing the early launch of a task force involving police from both countries as a follow-up to an agreement reached during last month's South Korea-Cambodia summit.

He added that the two sides are close to signing a related memorandum of understanding.
