President Lee Jae Myung has ordered officials to deploy all available personnel and equipment to rescue the workers who were trapped in Thursday’s Ulsan power plant collapse.

Presidential spokesperson Kim Nam-joon said in a media notice that Lee had urged authorities to take “thorough measures” to prevent secondary accidents among rescue crews.

Lee’s instructions follow reports that nine people were buried when a boiler tower collapsed at the Korea East-West Power Company’s Ulsan plant.

Speaking at a parliamentary audit the same day, presidential chief of staff Kang Hoon-sik told lawmakers that two workers had been rescued with injuries and that seven remain trapped.

Kang added that the presidential crisis management center has been on standby since the incident was reported.

Emergency teams are continuing nighttime operations to locate those still missing.
