Senior prosecutors are at odds over the government's decision not to appeal a high-profile corruption case involving the Daejang-dong development project.
Acting Prosecutor General Noh Man-seok told prosecutors Sunday that the decision had been made after careful deliberation in consultation with Jung Jin-woo, head of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office.
Noh said that, as with other major cases, the prosecution had considered the Justice Ministry’s opinion and concluded that it would be reasonable not to file an appeal.
He stressed that the decision was made under his responsibility and after consultation with the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office, adding that he was aware of differing opinions and concerns but hoped for understanding.
However, Jung issued a separate statement Sunday, asserting that he had recommended filing an appeal to the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office but that his proposal had been rejected.
Jung said he accepted the decision but emphasized that the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office held a different view, adding that he had offered to resign to take responsibility for the situation.
