Court Defers Trial on Security Law Violations

The Seoul High Court has decided to pospone a planned hearing of a case involving a man charged with violating the National Security Law.

The 35-year-old man, identified only by his surname Han, was indicted in 1998 for violating the anti-Communist law while heading a pro-unification activist group.

The court said it will wait until a final decision is reached in the ruling Uri Party's ongoing moves to repeal the draconian law. The opposition Grand National Party is vehemently opposed to the law's abolition.

The ruling camp, which has a slim majority in the National Assembly, is pushing to abolish the law during the current session of parliament.

The court said its decision to withhold legal proceedings would be in the interest of the defendant, whom it said would be found guilty if tried under the stipulations of the current national security law.
