The Presidential Commission on Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth has approved a new national goal to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 53-61 percent from 2018 levels by 2035.
The commission made the decision Monday during a plenary session at the government complex in Seoul with Prime Minister Kim Min-seok presiding.
The range replaces the single 40 percent target that had been in place for 2030, reflecting what officials called “future uncertainty” and the need to tie the lower bound to existing market regulations such as cap-and-trade programs.
The upper limit assumes expanded government support, technology development and industrial restructuring to meet generational demands for deeper cuts.
By sector, the plan envisions reductions of up to 75-point-three percent in power generation, 31 percent in industry, 56-point-two percent in buildings and 62-point-eight percent in transport.
Kim said all ministries would work to secure funding and design cross-government strategies to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
The final plan will be confirmed at Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting and presented later this month at the UN Climate Change Conference in Belém, Brazil.
