The Cabinet approved an updated goal under the Paris climate accords to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 53 to 61 percent from 2018 levels.
The plan, approved at a Tuesday meeting, would bring the country's emissions to between 289-point-five million and 348-point-nine million tons by 2035.
Seoul will announce the updated target at the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference, better known as COP30, in Belem, Brazil, which is set to run through November 21, before submitting them to the UN within the year.
In line with its pledges, the government said it would put forth a "K-green transition strategy" by the first half of 2026, including expanding its renewable energy capacity to 100 gigawatts by 2030 and transitioning to a distributed power grid.
The Cabinet also authorized the government's cap-and-trade plan, effective from 2026 to 2030, which lowers the total emissions cap for major businesses by nearly 17 percent to two-point-54 billion tons.
