U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau says South Korea and the U.S. have opened a “new chapter” in their alliance by announcing a joint fact sheet on bilateral trade and security agreements from their two summit meetings.

At a forum in Washington co-hosted by the Atlantic Council and the Korea Society on Friday, Landau called the document “historic” and encouraged people to read it closely, saying it lays out the allies’ joint priorities for the relationship in the years to come.

Some of the priorities Landau mentioned include rebuilding and expanding critical industries, maintaining stability in the foreign exchange market, enhancing commercial ties, promoting reciprocal trade, modernizing the alliance, and furthering maritime and nuclear partnerships.

Regarding the Donald Trump administration’s policy to revive American manufacturing, the deputy secretary said such efforts recognize South Korea as “one of the leading investors in the United States.”

Recalling September’s immigration crackdown at a battery plant construction site in the state of Georgia in which some 300 South Korean workers were apprehended and detained, Landau expressed a resolve to prevent a recurrence.

He said President Trump has been very clear that he welcomes South Koreans to come to the U.S. to train American workers in such “high-precision jobs.”
