A special prosecution team has visited the Seoul Detention Center to interrogate former President Yoon Suk Yeol about allegations that he interfered in a 2023 Marine investigation.

According to the correctional authorities on Sunday, special counsel Lee Myeong-hyeon’s team began questioning Yoon around 1:30 p.m. at the detention facility in Uiwang, Gyeonggi Province.

The session was reportedly underway in an official visitation room at the detention center, a space primarily used to question inmates in pretrial detention.

This marks the first time anyone has undergone questioning at a detention center in any of the three ongoing special counsel investigations.

Lee’s team plans to grill Yoon about allegations that he appointed former Defense Minister Lee Jong-sup as ambassador to Australia in an effort to thwart the efforts of investigators to uncover misconduct after the 2023 death of a Marine corporal.
