Speed skater Kim Joon-ho won a bronze medal at the first International Skating Union(ISU) Speed Skating World Cup of the season in Salt Lake City on Sunday.
Kim finished the men's 500-meter with a time of 33-point-78 seconds, breaking the South Korean record.
Cha Min-kyu set the previous South Korean record of 34-point-03 seconds at the ISU Speed Skating World Cup in March 2019.
Jenning De Boo of the Netherlands took the gold at this year’s World Cup, crossing the line at 33-point-63 seconds, and Yevgeniy Koshkin of Kazakhstan nabbed silver in 33-point-67 seconds.
Rising South Korean star Lee Na-hyun won her first individual medal at a World Cup, taking the bronze in the women’s 500-meter event with a time of 37-point-03 seconds.
Erin Jackson of the United States finished in 36-point-57 seconds to win silver, and Femke Kok of the Netherlands took gold in 36-point-09 seconds. Kok also broke the previous world record of 36-point-36 seconds in the 500-meter set by South Korean Olympic champion Lee Sang-hwa at the same venue 12 years ago.
