South Korea has joined the Powering Past Coal Alliance(PPCA), an international initiative aimed at phasing out coal-fired power generation.

Minister of Environment Kim Sung-whan announced South Korea’s participation during a high-level meeting at the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference, better known as COP30, in Belém, Brazil.

Kim also outlined South Korea’s plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 53 to 61 percent from 2018 levels by 2035.

The PPCA provides a framework for policy exchange, technical support and cooperation among governments, local authorities and businesses committed to the phased elimination of coal power.

More than 180 entities worldwide are currently members.

The South Korean government reaffirmed its goal to end coal-fired power generation by 2040 in September.
