The government has set up an investigation committee to look into the collapse of a boiler tower at a decommissioned thermal power plant in Ulsan, which killed seven workers.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said on Tuesday that it had formed the committee to investigate the cause of the disaster and to recommend measures to prevent similar accidents in the future.

The investigation will begin at the committee's inaugural meeting near the accident site on Tuesday afternoon.

The committee will determine whether prior procedures, including the safety management and demolition plans, were followed correctly, whether appropriate demolition methods were used and whether the client, construction company and supervisory agencies fulfilled their obligations.

The committee, chaired by a professor specializing in architectural structures, includes 12 experts from industry, academia and research institutes who have no direct ties to the accident or involved parties.

The committee will operate for four months, with the possibility of extension depending on the progress of the investigation.
