A far-right local pastor appeared for police questioning over allegations that he was behind a riot at a Seoul court in January after it issued a pretrial detention warrant for former President Yoon Suk Yeol regarding his martial law bid.
Pastor Jeon Kwang-hoon of Sarang Jeil Church was summoned Tuesday as a suspect by the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency on various allegations including inciting unlawful entry into a specially protected facility and obstructing public duty.
Prior to the interrogation, Jeon told reporters that he and his church have nothing to do with the January 19 riot at the Seoul Western District Court, and that a warning was issued during a protest one day ahead of the riot not to clash with law enforcement.
Investigators suspect that Jeon "psychologically gaslit" his followers through his religious platform and financially supported far-right YouTubers to instigate the courthouse riot, during which pro-Yoon protesters trespassed into the court premises.
Meanwhile, Jeon left the police questioning after around two hours, citing health concerns, and the police are expected to summon the pastor for an additional interrogation.
