National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik met with Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, the emir of Qatar, to discuss cooperation in defense, energy, artificial intelligence(AI) and other sectors.
During the meeting at the Royal Palace in Qatar on Tuesday, Woo expressed hope that Doha would take an interest in Seoul's defense industry advances, noting that Seoul's missile defense systems have received high marks.
He also noted that the two nations have maintained a mutually beneficial relationship in the liquefied natural gas sector for the past 30 years and voiced expectations for expanded collaboration in renewable energy, including solar power.
Woo emphasized South Korea's ambition to become one of the world’s top three AI powers and expressed willingness to work with Qatar in the field of advanced technologies.
In response, the Qatari leader acknowledged the strength of South Korean defense firms and said relevant Qatari authorities would review cooperation opportunities and share the results with Seoul.
The emir also expressed hope that South Korean companies would take part in Qatar’s goal to generate 30 percent of its total power capacity from solar energy by 2030.
